Ever since I got my appendix out and subsequently had 6 inches of large intestine removed due to complications, there seems to be an ever growing list of foods I can no longer eat due to surgically induced colitis. Now, I don't really blog about the ramifications of that fateful surgery 2 years ago this coming Thursday since it's not exactly sexy, but I thought I would compile a little list to let you know what a crapshoot (literally) eating has become for me.
1. Eggs (I never really could eat them, but the issue has become exacerbated in the past few years.)
2. Ground beef
3. Lettuce
4. Raw, fibrous veggies
5. Breads high in fiber, including Rye, Pumpernickel, and 12 grain.
6. Any type of seed or fruits where the seed can be consumed (poppy seeds actually kept me home from work for a whole day and I lost about 3 pounds after consuming a couple of mini poppy seed scones)
7. Butter
8. Onions
9. Tomatoes (they're fine if they're seeded)
10. Milk
11. Foods high in saturated fat (i.e. fast food)
12. Subway sandwiches
13. Foods high in refined white sugar
14. MSG
Now, keep in mind, that this is a running list and any food has the potential to create distress within 2 hours of consumption and you'll see the quandary I'm in. I've thought about going gluten-free vegetarian, but since I can't really eat vegetables either, I don't have much choice except to follow a modified low-residue diet that was originally prescribed by the hospital nutritionist after my second surgery. It's not a very good diet and since butter and ground beef are included in this list, you can see that it's not without its problems. So, take care of your guts people, because they can make your life truly miserable.

Thank god beer is not on that list or you'd be dead.
What about trying gluten free but not full blown vegan, have some white meat, fish, and the veggies you tolerate. FWIW I think lots of people really can't digest regular bread very well.
Wow, I'd have to say I agree with sandra - at least beer isn't on that list.
Sorry to hear about the tummy troubles. It must be damn near impossible to find anything that you can eat when you go out.
Coincidentally, I've recently decided that I'm better off on a gluten-free diet. I almost posted something about it, but I thought stories of explosive butt mud would scare off the few readers I have.
Tell me about it...However, I really started to cook and found that I actually enjoy it very much when I went gluten free and vegan.
Go here and check out my latest recipe of Mac and Cheese...YUM!!
I totally understand where you're coming from. While I haven't had to go under the knife, I do have many issues of my own. I am both lactose and gluten intolerant. Obviously, this puts a cog in the digestive works for me too.
I always feel better when I eat gluten free and limit my dairy intake, but it's hard to do when eating out. I've just tried to learn how to balance it as best as I can. It's not easy, and my stomach hurts almost every day.
